It may sound silly, but traveling with a snooze buddy has helped more than one of my friends get through a long-haul flight!

8) Practice deep breathing. This will not only help with anxiety about the flight but can also help you fall asleep even in a noisy plane cabin! Try to regulate your breathing so that it’s slow and quiet — inhaling for 5 seconds and exhaling for 7. Repeat this throughout the flight when you feel yourself feeling anxious or stressed.

9) Stay hydrated. This might seem like a no-brainer, but staying hydrated is one of the easiest ways to keep calm during a long flight! Drinking plenty of water will not only keep your skin glowing, but it’ll also keep you from feeling thirsty when onboard which is very important since most airplane cabins are extremely dry! Make sure to drink at least 2 cups in the morning before you take off so that you have them in-between your connecting flights, and then another 2 when you board.

10) Get some exercise. This might sound counterintuitive if you’re sitting down for a long time, but even just stretching out your legs every once in a while is good for both circulation and anxiety levels! Even if it’s just 5 minutes at a time to stretch your feet or do some quick yoga poses, it’ll help get rid of the built-up tension in your muscles which can make it easier to relax during the flight.     

11) Wear loose clothing. If I’m traveling somewhere hot (which I tend to do because Canada gets very chilly), I like to wear leggings, shorts, a loose tank top, or a light sweater. I find that wearing clothing with less constriction can be helpful on both sleeping and comfort levels, especially if you’re going on a long flight where they may not offer much in the way of sizing or selection!

12) Bring some entertainment. In my experience, it’s always good to have something on hand while flying to keep yourself distracted from how nervous you were before take-off. If you’re worried about having no “safe” entertainment options, don’t forget that your smartphone is full of apps that can help distract you for hours on end. Some personal favorites include: playing sudoku puzzles, reading articles on Pocket  or Reddit  (I usually just open up my front page for all kinds of interesting reading), watching movies or TV shows on Netflix  or iTunes, playing games, listening to podcasts or music, browsing Tumblr  and Pinterest  (I even find these two are great for getting me through long flights because I can browse at my own pace)

13) Feed the fierceness. Having something yummy is always a good idea when flying! Even if it’s just some nice snacks you packed yourself (some crackers, nuts, cheese, and fruit are perfect!), having them can help make you feel more comfortable about being stuck in the plane cabin. I also like to bring along chamomile tea bags with me since they’re useful for calming anxiety. As an added bonus, they can be a great way to have something warm when you’re flying somewhere cold!

14) Keep your plans vague. In my opinion, it’s always good to keep your travel plans as general as possible when talking about them with people around you. I usually try not to mention the exact dates or the name of the city where I’m going so that I don’t have to feel embarrassed in case anything unexpected comes up and I have to cancel my trip at the last minute. This is especially important if you’re traveling alone since no one wants anyone they know showing up unexpectedly at their hotel room looking for them!

15) Be friendly. That’s important since it can sometimes make them feel less nervous about listening in on your conversations or looking at what you’re doing on your iPad/laptop/phone (depending on where they’re seated!)

16) Remember: no one knows how old you are. This is especially useful during long-haul flights when everyone around me looks like they’re much older than I am. Even though I’m 21 years old, I often use this as an opportunity to pretend I’m 18 again since, in my experience, it’s a lot less awkward when people ask me for ID. Even if I have to reach into the depths of my wallet to find something that makes it look like I’m 18 again, I always feel a little bit better about not having to explain myself for wanting a fancy cocktail.

17) Plan ahead. Try to make sure you’ve packed everything you need in your carry-on bag before going through security so that there aren’t any last-minute mix-ups or panic attacks when realizing you left your toothbrush at home! It’s also good to double-check where the bathrooms are on your plane before getting settled in since they can be hard to find once everyone starts boarding. Plus, knowing where they are from the get-go will make it easier to go at your own pace when you need to!

18) Get up and stretch. I’m always disappointed in myself when I forget to make time for this during my flight because stretching out every so often really helps to keep the blood flowing throughout my body. If possible, I also like getting up and moving around at least once or twice an hour while flying since it makes me feel a little better about having to sit in one place for so long!

19) Nurse your hangover/be hungover. This is especially useful if you’re on a trip abroad and partying all night before catching your flight home. Trust me on this one—you’ll be happy that you have some headache medicine with you on the flight if you’re hungover! It might even help you feel a little more comfortable about being so far from home. Plus, it’s always good to have something on hand in case the person next to you accidentally spills their red wine all over your white shirt right as you’re boarding the plane.

20) If possible, try and sleep as much as possible. I’m one of those people who really doesn’t like flying because I get extremely restless and there isn’t much I can do about it! If this sounds like you, try taking some sleeping pills on board with you since they’ll help knock you out for at least a couple of hours of your flight time. A tablet/iPad filled with movies or TV shows before going to sleep is also a great idea since you can just use them to shut your brain off and relax.

21) Watch your drinks. This is extremely important if the person next to you has ordered a vodka soda before take-off or decided that it was a good idea to get wasted on the plane! Even though it might be fun for them, I always find myself laughing nervously when I see people getting drunk around me because they’re standing out like sore thumbs without even trying. It’s easier than you think for flight attendants to figure out who’s been drinking so don’t make their job any harder than it already is by making it obvious that you’ve had one too many! Also, please don’t ever throw up on board my flight!

22) Bring a journal. This is useful if you’re going on a trip for work and need somewhere to write your thoughts/diaries about what you did that day. However, it can also be a great tool to use if you really need some time alone with your thoughts! If the person next to me is tapping away at their phone/iPad for hours or snoring loudly as soon as take-off happens, I always make sure to break out my trusty journal and pen so that I’m not tempted to wake them up from their slumber. 23) Try and eat healthy snacks during your flight. This applies to both long-haul and short-haul flights since it’s always better to travel on an empty stomach if you can! I tend to go overboard with the snacks during my flight because I get so hungry all of a sudden, but there are definitely some healthy snacks that are better than others (and don’t make you feel like crap afterward). The best thing about eating healthy while flying is that you’ll be getting all your fruit/veg servings for the day even though you’re stuck sitting in the air. Plus, avocados are delicious.

24) Bring something interesting to read. Just like bringing a journal on board, this applies only if you know for sure that there won’t be anything interesting to do on your flight! This may not be an option if you’re going on a really long-haul flight, but sometimes after take-off, the air conditioner starts working again which means that you can get your temperature back down to normal levels. This device may also prove to be useful if you find it difficult to sleep during your business traveller trip (e.g., when traveling eastward and your desired sleep time occurs before the bright morning hours).

3) Do not drink caffeinated drinks in the evening, since caffeine is a stimulant that can make it harder for you to fall asleep at night. Also avoid alcoholic beverages because they cause dehydration (which will increase your chances of getting disrupted sleep), especially when there is a time difference involved (e.g., crossing the international date line).

4) Exercise daily, which produces melatonin and increases body temperature and blood flow in preparation for sleeping. However, exercising too close to bedtime may interfere with your ability to fall asleep in another 2-3 hours after exercising.

5) Take a natural sleep aid about 1 hour before you go to bed, such as Valerian root or melatonin. Some people find that 5-HTP helps them get to sleep faster and stay asleep longer. Remember that healthy sleep depends upon healthy lifestyle habits such as good nutrition, hydration levels, and exercise. Have your last meal about an hour before going to bed since heavy meals can delay the onset of sleep. It may be helpful to consult a qualified herbalist, naturopath, or homeopath who can personalize a recipe for better rest and stress relief.

6) For rapid eastward travel across time zones: 1) Do not eat until after your flight so you will arrive hungry and ready for local eating times. 2) After arrival, go outdoors to receive sunlight since there are no similar effects of bright light at home. 3) Display clocks in your hotel room showing the time at home along with the local time so you can constantly experience the actual time difference between locations. 4) Get plenty of exercise during your stay. 5) Sleep for 7-8 hours once per day by going to bed 1 hour earlier than usual until you feel fully adjusted to eastward business travelling (this takes approx. 5 days).

7) If you have a bad case of jet lag, try melatonin tablets or another natural supplement before bedtime that will help your body to reset its clock earlier and account for any time zone changes involved. You may also consider taking melatonin pills throughout your trip as a preventive measure.

8) Maintain healthy eating habits while business travelling in order to avoid jet lag symptoms that may result from poor diet or dietary changes caused by travel stress. Keep track of your meals during your trip using a food journal so you can better understand what factors contribute to jet lag symptoms.

9) For very long international flights, try wearing a sleep mask and earplugs on the flight to improve your chances of getting adequate rest. If you are a business traveller during a daytime flight, take advantage of the light by exposing yourself to it when possible.

Putting It All Together And Making You A More Efficient Traveller

In this article, I have taught you what I believe to be the most important things you need to know in order to be a business traveller efficiently. Most of these things are self-explanatory and can even be used when traveling by car or on a bicycle. Just remember that every problem has a solution, and while some solutions may seem complicated at first, they will become second nature after a while.
